The Closing Room involves 'closing' or creating the uppers of the shoes. This department contains many different operations; from simple edge staining and ironing, to punching of the holes for brogue patterns, fitting eyelets and tassels, and stitching parts of the patterns together to form the shoe upper. The Closing Room operatives and machinists are highly skilled using old traditional machines and requiring excellent hand and eye coordination to follow the line of the pattern.
These positions will be well paid and secure. All vacancies are full time roles which will suit people who are flexible, reliable and have an excellent eye for detail. Experience is not a necessity but would obviously be of benefit. Full training offered.
The Clicking Room: The first stage of production is to cut the uppers of the shoes from the upper leather and lining leather, using the patterns and emboss or stamp sizes and style names onto the linings. The 'Clicker' is a highly skilled operative, named after the 'click' sound which the hand cutting knife makes as it is removed from the leather. The Clicker is responsible for examining the leather for any defects, scars or growth marks before deciding which part to cut the shoes from. A good clicker will be very knowledgeable about leather and the problems which can arise from it being a natural material, in order to maximise the usage whilst retaining the upmost quality.
We are looking for dependable, motivated and committed people to become a part of our established Clicking room. These roles would suit existing clickers or people who have a fantastic eye for detail with great hand eye co-ordination. Please apply in writing using the Crockett & Jones application form.
