Last No. 228
Produced in January 1954. Last 228 is a Main Line last, with a medium round toe and generous toe depth. Dating back to the mid-50s, the last was developed to be used for country walking shoes and boots. In 2015, last 228 cemented itself into Crockett & Jones’ legacy, when Radnor in Black Calf appeared in James Bond’s SPECTRE. Fitting advice from retail… Last 228 fits true to size. The rugged Commando sole that often accompanies models made on this last is quite firm during the initial wear. Aesthetically its toe box is similar to the 314, 325, and 335 lasts. With the outdoor nature of this boot, keep in mind that you may want to wear heavier weight socks.
Chukka / Derby Boot
It is believed that a Chukka boot has both a sporting and a military heritage. A Chukka boot (or Desert boot) is constructed using three pieces of outer material – Inside Quarter, Outside Quarter and Vamp with low cut leg (but above the ankle) and two to three eyelets. In contrast, a Derby boot is a fully lined, high leg and all together, more substantial boot with variations similar to a Derby shoe. Chukka boots are usually considered unlined, although lined versions are available and they are often regarded as the most comfortable of all styles.
