A Day in the life of...

Running the oldest Crockett & Jones shop in Jermyn Street is sometimes stranger than fiction. Slow days are rare, busy days are frequent and some days are just…different.

One nice thing about our shoes is that our price point is quite moderate for the quality we offer. This results in a very wide range of customers, rather than just one niche. You never know who is going to walk through the door and that makes retailing Crockett & Jones shoes and interacting with future and existing customers, far more interesting.

As the store manager, I always greet our customers and try to find out how we can best help. Some people have questions about repairs, others are just looking for inspiration and others yet again know exactly what they want!

I remember a young man in the shop trying on a pair of Skye boots he was considering as a future purchase. While we were lacing them up a famous bodybuilder/actor/politician walked into the shop. Incidentally we had previously made this actor a pair of Skye boots in green. He immediately saw the boots the young man was putting on and told him how great and versatile they were and how they go with everything. The young man realised that it was becoming increasingly difficult to not buy the boots and replied that he wasn’t sure they would go with a suit, as last line of defence. The response he got was “Ahh, I wear what I want!” with a wink. As we were quite busy the actor left the shop, turning around in the door saying “I will be back”. The young man purchased the Skye boots and a great story, on the spot.

Another time a returning customer visited, asking which one of us would be working the next Saturday and if we could help with something... For his birthday his wife, knowing how much he loved Crockett & Jones shoes, wanted to treat him to another pair. The problem; there 'might' have been some ‘miscommunication’ between him and his wife in the past regarding the price of our shoes. Due to this 'miscommunication' she was under the impression that our shoes cost about half of their actual price.

To camouflage this, the gentleman made a deposit of £200 before coming back with his wife the following Saturday. They chose a lovely pair of brown brogues of which we informed the wife the price was £240. All seemed to have gone well up to the point where another customer said “I’ll have a pair of those for £240!” Fortunately we managed to stall him, explaining the situation after the couple had left with their birthday present. Both gentlemen remain loyal customers, the wife remains (we believe) blissfully unaware.

Events like these don’t happen every day, however one of the many perks of my job is that I get to meet new people every day. Everyone has a story to tell or an interesting experience to share; no two days are the same at 69 Jermyn Street.
