Hetty Chidwick, Luxury Editor of Country Life, lives in flat shoes at this time of year—whether pounding the streets for last minute presents or spinning a social whirl from party to party. Crockett & Jones have a pair for all occasions—Christmas is a time for comfort and joy after all.
I adore the lead up to Christmas, and in the world of magazines this is a good job too — I have been furtively nibbling mince pies since July. Shoes are always top of my Christmas list, not just a fast-fashion fix, but instead I crave beautifully crafted pairs, in elegant, timeless styles to add to my shoe arsenal. I really believe that when rushing from Christmas shopping, to Christmas party—flats are the only way. So here is my pick of the three saviour styles to see you through this hectic but heavenly time of year.
Shoes are always top of my Christmas list
Cocktail Party – Poppies
A pair of velvet, house slippers are eternally elegant and I never, ever regret wearing eye-catching flats to an evening soirée. I always find far more shoe-pliments flying my way when I am comfortable, so I can get on with having fun. You can smugly wear these all evening and probably keep them on with your pyjamas once you get home too, rather than angrily flinging them off in the taxi on the way home. The Poppies are just divine—an air of androgyny makes them cool customers, with the floral embroidery giving the feminine and flamboyant touch. Pair with a favourite black dress and opaque tights to hit up party after party, or, if you’re feeling more daring, leather trousers and a bright red polo neck, with lipstick to match.
Christmas Shopping – Lottie
Last minute shoppers listen up (I am with you) footwear choice is key for these moments. Rushing around in freezing conditions laden down with bags, calls for a pair of Shark Grey Suede Lottie Chelsea boots, so beautifully made in buttery soft suede you feel like you might well have been born in them. They get better with age, which is lucky, seeing as they will certainly get the most wear out of all the shoes in your wardrobe, from now until spring and beyond. Wear with jeans and a huge duck down coat to take the shops by storm—or perhaps for that post lunch stroll on Christmas day—then wear them with a summer dress and little jacket later in the year.

Christmas Day – Jenny
Christmas day is imminent, and something about the day makes me long to dress up. Whether spending it with just a few closest family (you lucky things) or perhaps every cousin under the sun—Christmas Day brings out the child in everyone, and something about these shiny brogues are totally ageless—a teenager or Grandmother would suit them respectively. ‘Christmas day shoes’ work even better if they are ‘box fresh’ on the morning, so let’s hope these Burgandy Burnished Calf Suede Jenny brogues—with gorgeous ribbons instead of laces—are wrapped up and sitting prettily under the tree this year.
