Our extended family are important to us (full stop!). They are not always easy to come by, sometimes taking years to unearth and often through the shear dogged determination shown from the stockists themselves… Some, don’t even exist yet. But we know that more end consumers will become stockists of the future, much like our learned friends Chris & Nick Schaerf. The former a Lawyer, the latter a Surgeon, these chaps are serious! Both were experienced customers of Crockett & Jones shoes, and when they saw a gap in the Australian market, jumped on it with the usual Oz grit, determination and passion.
Some might say that boarding a plane to the UK without a pre-agreed meeting with Jonathan (Managing Director) or Robin (our former Export Sales Director / shoe trade legend), is crazy… Not the Schaerf brothers. Sometimes you just have to take a chance.
We are thankful and grateful that they took that chance, since becoming great friends and advocates of Crockett & Jones whilst building really beautiful retail business.
Double Monk is a purveyor of top-tier men’s shoes and appurtenances based in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. At Double Monk we stock things that will last for decades, not years. The aesthetic values informing the things we sell, whether innovative or traditional in style, acknowledge and serve the principles of place, time and purpose.
We do not deal in fickle wears. Fashion is contrary and slave to irony, and it chases tomorrow at the expense of today. Unfortunately, many things you can buy these days are conceived and designed merely to negotiate an antagonistic, tired and crowded market. We instead present our customers with items in which the qualities are plainly intrinsic to the product as it is defined.
We share a passion for heritage, not only in design, but also in usage and craft. We endeavour to find, understand and deliver products that advantage committed craftspeople and all people who may use their products. The ideas and origins behind these products, their place in both history and in the present, are of utmost importance to us.
As a company, we still think and act as customers. We identify with the thrill, fascination and desire for great and useful things. We have been passionate and devoted users and wearers of all the brands and makes we represent and we consider it an honour to represent them.
How long have you been working with Crockett & Jones?
We have been selling Crockett & Jones since our inception more than five years ago.
Why have you chosen to stock Crockett & Jones Shoes & Boots?
Crockett & Jones is the backbone of our business and represents everything that defines what we want our business to be represent: classicism, substance, integrity, authenticity and heritage.
In our eyes C&J is the perfect shoe business and the ideal producer of shoes. Time stands testament to that. We always explain to our customers that Crockett & Jones is owned and run by the same family who founded it in the 19th century and that the shoes are made entirely in the one factory (their own factory) in Northampton, England.
The company and its products are the real deal – no smoke and mirrors. We have always felt immense confidence and pride wearing Crockett & Jones shoes and we love imparting this feeling to every customer who is considering purchasing shoes from us.
Which style(s) do you think is the most iconic from the Crockett & Jones Collection?
Probably the Connaught. It is the shoe equivalent of a Supermarine Spitfire. It is so elegant, and yet it has a tenacious, no-fuss character to its appearance. It is thoroughly British-looking and steadfastly masculine.
If you have any particularly fond memories of your time working with Crockett & Jones, we would love to hear and share them.
Many of us here at Double Monk have been to the factory in Northampton and met the very people who make these amazing shoes and boots. To see the huge technical complexity and human finesse that goes into producing each pair is a marvel. Only upon seeing this in person does one begin to appreciate both the technical achievement and the value of each pair of shoes.
