This Spring Summer, our best-selling styles from the Women’s Collection have been taken down memory lane, to a wonderful gem. A house, designed by the marvellous...
Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Situated near to our 19th century factory, in Northampton, 78 Derngate is a beautiful Moderne house. The perfect location for our seasonal photography. Florence Jane Jones, the third surviving daughter of Charles Jones, co-founder of Crockett & Jones, married a successful businessman from Northampton, W.J.Bassett-Lowke. Bassett-Lowke came to know ‘Jane’ through her eldest brother Frank Jones, another active Jones in the family firm at the time.
In preparation for their home together, Bassett-Lowke had in 1916 acquired a four storey Georgian Terrace House at 78 Derngate. He then sought out and commissioned Charles Rennie Mackintosh to redesign the layout of the house, producing striking Modern designs and stencils for the decoration and furnishing throughout. Incredibly, the forward thinking 78 Derngate, so lovingly cared for by F.J.Jones and W.J.Bassett-Lowke, was the only architectural commission that Mackintosh undertook in England and was to be his very last architectural project.
Jane would be proud in the knowledge that her family footwear manufacturer has not only stood the test of time, but is still thriving and able to offer a Women’s Collection of quality and beautiful elegance and design.
