At Crockett & Jones we take pride in the tanning of our Chestnut Calf leather, and work carefully with our partner tanneries to secure only the very best ‘A-grade’ skins. With a rich, reddy hue like the name suggests, the quality of the leather and its ability to take colour flawlessly is of paramount importance. Our leather buyers are particularly picky when it comes to choosing the skins that go into our Chestnut Calf shoes and boots. Burnished Chestnut makes for a lovely accent colour for footwear, perfect for weekends and for formal dressing. If you’re tied into conservative Black or Dark Brown shoes during the week, a couple of pairs of Chestnut shoes in the wardrobe can make for a welcome opportunity to have some fun with your footwear.
With this in mind, we tend to offer our more distinctive smart-casual shoes in Chestnut Calf to be paired with jeans (chestnut works brilliantly with dark indigo denim), colourful cords or chinos – depending on the season. The perfect place to start is with a pair of our Chelsea 8 boots, which are as versatile as can be with their simple good looks. If you’re sorted for Chelseas, a wholecut boot that’s a little different is our Cottesmore Jodhpur boot, with its handsome forepart and neat wrap-around ankle buckles. The Chelsea 8 sits on our neat rubber City Sole, whereas Cottesmore benefits from traditional double-leather soles, which add to its sporty profile.
Boots aside, our Selby butterfly loafer is another smart-casual winner; just that little bit different to a classic penny loafer in terms of design, but every bit as wearable with its hand-pulled-up apron and well-balanced profile, care of the 375 last. Monkton occupies a similar smart-casual space for those who prefer monk shoes, being a simple single-buckle monk shoe with striking square toes. Monkton is a great shoe to dress with rolled-up chinos and colourful socks, with just a flash of silver side-buckle on show.
Chestnut Antique Calf also makes a good showing in our Hand Grade collection. The Harcourt is one of the chicest penny loafers we make; an unusual blind strap design and recognised Jermyn Street classic. With its stunning lines care of our new, Hand Grade collection 140 last, we often think that Harcourt makes for the perfect summer wedding shoe, paired with a French blue suit. Our Winston and Lawrence 2 monk shoes are similarly distinctive; the former with a wholecut forepart and punched toes, and the latter with the unusual hand-sewn apron and split-toe design you’d usually associate with ‘Norwegian’ derby shoes.
Alongside this trio sits the equally distinguished Charlton Balmoral-Oxford boot. This is perhaps one of our most underrated boots; a dressy design with early 20th century origins that is contemporised with its clean looks and two-tone uppers. Again, Charlton is a boot that works comfortably with denim or tailoring alike, especially with generously cuffed trousers. Both Charlton and our final Chestnut Hand Grade model, the Belgrave cap-toe Oxford, are lasted on the 337; a last that is a beauty to behold, with elongated chiselled toes and a sweeping vamp.
Talking of cap-toe Oxfords, we’d be remiss not to remind you of three Chestnut Calf classics in our Main Collection too. The first is Connaught, our classic straight cap toe Oxford, which, in Chestnut, looks simply stunning with a navy or dark grey suit or chic tailored separates. Westbourne is lasted on the perennially popular 348 last, and its punched toe caps accentuate the last’s square toe box for a particularly rakish look. For those who prefer rounded toes, the Malton is a similar Oxford semi-brogue lasted on the 360, with sweeping rounded toes that are extremely elegant.
While not perhaps an everyday choice, Chestnut Calf shoes are perfect for those moments in life when you want to feel your best; for wearing when you want to cut a dash, or else when you need a change from Black Calf and Dark Brown Suede. Whether an unusual pair of loafers, clean-cut ankle boots or a striking Hand Grade monk-strap design, our Chestnut Calf leather shoes should be the undisputed feel-good choice in your collection.
