The Finishing Room

By the time a pair of shoes make their way into our Finishing Room craftsmanship is in full flow and mistakes are costly. The heels are attached, trimmed and then scoured with emery paper for a smooth finish. A process called ‘edge trimming’ is the next highly skilled operation, whereby the sole edges are trimmed to a specific shape, accurately mimicking the last it was designed for and has journeyed around our factory on.

The soles and heels are then stained and hot wax is applied to the edges to provide a waterproof seal and a good shine. The Finishing department provides some of the finest details and aesthetics that can be appreciated on a pair of Crockett & Jones shoes. Various decorative finishes are applied to every pair that pass through our factory, such as wheeling and crowing, top ironing and a Gentleman’s Corner before moving on to a final polish.

Arguably a shoemaker’s signature, the finishing of a pair of handmade shoes, has always placed Crockett & Jones alongside a handful of other makers as one of the finest Northampton shoe manufacturers.
