Shoes & Styles: Casual Wear

We’re living through strange times, aren’t we? A few short weeks ago, many of us were out and about without a care in the world. Now, we’ve no doubt that many readers will be working from home, hopefully happy and healthy, and waiting out this strange turn of events.

In turn, we hope that stories like this will provide some welcome light relief, and we have another suggestion for you too; even if you are working from home, dressing for the day helps a person to stay sane. So, even if you’re pottering around the house, or just leaving home for a quick run into town in search of some elusive loo-roll, it still pays to think about your footwear. A pair of relaxed suede shoes are not only comfortable to wear in the locale, they’re perfectly suited to time spent relaxing at home, or taking a walk around the block.

Many English shoemakers are guilty of treating their suede shoes as an after-thought, but that’s not our style. All our suedes are sourced with the same degree of care and attention as our full-grain leathers. We use Repello Suede in our Main Line collection, which is A-grade quality, aniline dyed and sourced from only the finest tanneries. It’s also waterproofed during the tanning process to en-sure that if you get caught in a shower, your feet will survive unscathed. For more on our suedes, you can swot up here.

With so many suede models to choose from, it can be easy to overlook the classics. So, here’s a gentle reminder that few shoes will be more useful or pleasurable to wear than our Cavendish tassel loafers in Dark Brown Suede. Versatile, elegant and comfortable, this classic loafer ticks more or less every box. It’s soled on classic single leather soles and made on last 325, which is a best-seller in of itself, known for its well-balanced proportions. The 325 also boasts a relatively deep toe box, which ensures it’s comfortable to wear. Here, we’ve dressed the Cavendish with dark indigo selvedge denim jeans from FullCount, a Japanese denim specialist, finished with healthy rolled-up hems. And, yes, we’ve dared to style them ‘sock-less’ too.

In spring and summer, loafers like these come into their own, and with a pair of invisible socks on you’ll feel cool and comfortable all through the day. We offer the Cavendish in no less than seven different colour-ways, such is its popularity, with all but the more formal smooth calf options making perfect casual companions.

Next up, our Hardwick split-toe Derby shoes with an apron front, a mainstay of the Main Line collection. The Hardwick’s one of those precious shoes that just keeps on giving; it’s lightweight and softly structured – so in breathable suede it’s incredibly comfortable to wear, while its long, lean last (the 341) offers plenty of support throughout the foot. We finish the Hardwick with our signature rubber City Sole, which ensures it is comfortable to pound pavements in to your heart’s content. Here, it’s styled simply with classic beige cotton chinos from Polo Ralph Lauren, rolled up to reveal a flash of crimson Lisle cotton sock from the London Sock Co.

And, with chinos on the agenda, our final casualwear suggestion is another easy-wearing staple. We introduced the Cottesmore Jodhpur boot in our Autumn/Winter ’19 collection and it has become a firm smart-casual favourite. The boot’s story is in its name: Jodhpur boots were first worn in British India by polo players in the 1910s, and by the 1920s they’d been popularised by young, stylish men throughout Europe and America. Today, they’re a sophisticated alternative to lace-up or Chelsea boots, but no less sleek with their plain fronts. Like the Hardwick, these are lasted on the 341 and also finished with rubber City Soles, so they’re as versatile as can be. Perfect paired with pressed navy chinos (another pair chosen, appropriately, from Polo Ralph Lauren) and an indigo-dyed cotton chambray overshirt from Drake’s.

Each of these three pairs is tried and tested, and makes for an elegant addition to your casual ward-robe. Good quality suede, after all, is softer than leather, with its own unique velvety handle – it’s the perfect material in which to make the most of your time at home.
